Agreed Tom. People's arguments that big drivers require big power are a simplification and often misleading. Very happy running my 604 with single-digit SE watts, although greater PP SS watts are nice .......

For me, yes. Where practical, I like to run nominal loads a touch higher than what many people would think is optimal/efficient. Higher loads and inductance are not really a problem for quality custom .......

Tough to answer Andy. It depends on operating points. Some folks say the 2A3 types are slightly more linear and better sounding than 300Bs. Run the curves with different loads and you will quickly fin .......

As a rule of thumb, yes, as power requirements of output transformers increase, it becomes more difficult to get good performance. I think really, really good transformers can be wound for amplifiers .......

I have a similar arrangement for my directly coupled amp. In my case it does not matter which switch is flipped first: flip one switch and filaments/heaters do their thing; flip the other and B+ gets .......

The Dr low mu amps powered the 2a3 filaments from a CT transformer, AC without any further nulling. If that is the case with your amp, it will be one significant source of noise. .......

That is my take too. By de-rating the transformer you are more likely to have long life, reliability, and quiet operation. And it does not add greatly to the cost, generally. Take care. .......

A 58mA RMS rated secondary seems low for 50mA DC, CT, C-input tube rectified power supply. For 50mA DC draw I'd expect to see 70mA RMS, or greater. The JE Labs design quoted would likely have 65-70mA .......

The JJ 2A340 is pretty nice: solid, dynamic, big and still direct; relative to the mids, bass can sound a bit soft and treble slightly (not offensively - some will like this) crisp - not zingy like so .......

Yeah, there are some other power line issues - any power switching, though sometimes it is an issue, at other times not. I've tried a power conditioner but it did not help. I might try a different typ .......

I use paralleled Mills MRA-12 bypasses with Mundorf Evo Oil. The Evo is perhaps a bit treble enhanced, but vibrant without being rough. My next amp will use the Mills but not the Evo. Edit: fix frikke .......

An anaemic pentode shouldn't smear the high frequencies together. I'd expect it to be more like a gradual roll-off of the high frequencies. No smearing in my system - doesn't sound overtly rolled off .......
