On this point: "I often wonder how much building endless headroom into a design @ 20Hz pushes the low level info down into the depths of what a core can resolve."
Quality nanocrystalline cores are apparently extremely resolving of low level detail; there is relatively less burnished glow or obfuscation than with nickel or GOSS. Personal conversations with different winders who have been honing their craft for nano cores suggest that not only *can* you build in more than sufficient inductance and headroom while maintaining low level resolution, it is *essential* to achieve a balanced sound... to avoid the common "detailed but sounds lean" presentation. That of course forces its own compromises and demands extremely well-sorted winding techniques - not a trivial matter apparently.
But hey, I'm no engineer and only have my limited experience and a few candid discussions to go on. And I have the usual human biases etc... ;-)
