Contrast and compare:Transformers used in my 2W amp are custom wound and gapped specifically for my operating points and provide about 47Hy for a 4K2 primary; they are also well designed and built. The output tube is operated and loaded at a low distortion operating point. So, although only 2W output, probably a good 2W.
The SET amp prior to this, which used a similar tube compliment, had almost double the power but ran more traditional transformers and higher distortion operating points; probably the equivalent of many good-quality DIY and commercial builds. Comparatively, it sounds a bit sluggish, less dynamic and less resolved in the bass... but has roughly the same extension and a bit more weight: perhaps a good representation of what people associate with traditional SET sound. Not as much to my liking though, despite roughly double the power.
Thanks C-B.
