It bothers you because it violates some of your beliefs and expectations - this applies to us all. It bothers me to, even though my beliefs and expectations are different to yours.
If engineering is important to Person A, say, they've worked hard at developing those skills and perhaps it brings them order/control/consistency, provides clear answers, or maybe even is so important as to give them self-worth or meaning. It follows that Person A may have expectations that engineering is respected and valued, if not held sacrosanct.
What happens when Person B, perhaps a narcissist, that holds no respect for engineering, or claims traditional engineering is junk in a most disrespectful way, uses pseudo-engineering to support their claims... and in doing so, promotes their own products (even if they are not explicitly mentioned).
The answer is that Person A perceives Person B's actions as a threat and defends, or runs, or freezes. And in doing so, Person A is reacting and executing strategies that maybe worked in the past and will have been used many times before... without being aware or knowing why.
Well, that's my take anyway.
Cheers,
