Sorry it has taken me a while to get back to this.It depends on what you are trying achieve: gain, voltage out, output impedance etc. For most situations, my tendency would be for a single tube: generally, enough gain and voltage and a low enough source impedance can be achieved.
Jac has a series of 20B preamps and headphone amps on his Jac Music site if you are interested.
FWIW, the 20B is beefy enough to build a decent ~5W SE power amp using a single 20B per channel: Wavelength Audio and Tron (I think) have had versions and Min at Tube Audio Lab has knocked up a few. I'm tempted: deceptively simple, but really demands care in physical design/layout and quality components: the 4x input transformer commonly used demands a low source impedance and the output transformers are the challenge at 10k:8 Ohms (10kOhm primary, at least), with lots of inductance at 50mA... I don't need much power, so maybe voltage and current could be relaxed and a 2x input transformer should be fine and demands much less of the prececeeding stage. Still, probably a big commitment for an amp with narrow application. Just my kind of thing. 😀 Would probably be as transparent-sounding as f#&k.
Cheers,
