RE: Why 300b ?

Widely available at range of prices and sonic presentations. Sufficient power for wider range of systems and preferences than a 45 or 2A3 can support. Also, sonics are shaped somewhat by the chosen operating points.

Want a 300B that has a more 45-like presentation: try 50mA/350V with 5K load; 50mA/390V may get you even closer. Basically, run the 300B closer to a 45 I/V ratio. These operating points will sound rather different to the 80mA/350 ratios running circa 2k5 or 3k loads.

I'll be running a modern 2A3 at 40mA/250V with 4k2 load on my next build; should be good for a 2.5W and I'd guess sound not dissimilar to the same manufacturers 45. It should last longer than a 45 though.
