I have no issue driving the 2A3 with a directly-coupled 6C6 ("weak" pentode with circa 100x gain) - sounds nice indeed. Noise can be an issue due to high input impedance and high gain, especially as I am using unshielded interconnects; careful cable routing takes care of it.
