Do It Yourself (DIY) paradise for tube and SET project builders.

RE: the same dogma from the same people, with a couple of exceptions

I'm not in position to answer your question vinnie. There can be many interpretations of " do it yourself" and the guidelines and moderators are not clear on this. I can only tell you what my expectations are... what I'd like.

If I am going to do something, I attempt to learn a bit about it first. If safety is involved, I'm careful in learning about that well. I guess if I'm going to do something, I'd like to do it decently well, which takes effort on my part, but assistance as well. When learning something new I like to at least have learned some fundamentals and have some concept of what I don't know. This way, I can better seek advice in way that is likely to get a helpful response, imposes minimally on those people who are sharing the benefits of their hard-earned knowledge, and better assess what they are telling me. It deepens my appreciation of the craft. I'm big on collaboration: to me that involves all parties contributing towards achieving something, mostly for the something that benefits the group or more broadly. I'm not the type of person the does the minimum then puts out my hand expecting others to do the hard work for me. I get that people will think differently, or draw the line differently; no problem.

So, in building an amp, I learned how to do it safely and well... and bought a partial kit with rough instructions to minimise risk. Never finished it though: I moved on due to not liking the chassis and some components... but I learned. For my scratch build I developed my knowledge further and did not need much assistance, though Tre was super in helping me get filament voltages under control... took only a couple of posts. And I learned.

My current project is designing an amp. I've got most of the design covered and know where to find the info needed to complete the design. I've been posting the design process/decisions (elsewhere) and others can comment if they wish; I may even ask for those opinions or advice from time to time. It is a learning experience and I take ownership of that... but am enjoying possibly putting something decent back out there for the community.

So, I guess this is do it yourself, with some emphasis on "yourself". Take some ownership of your own stuff, especially safety, but of course ask for assistance (in a way that minimises imposition and is likely to be productive) and be thankful when others invest their time in trying to help. And learn, not just the technical stuff, but also how to provide info and ask questions to get the help you need. People place different emphasis on "yourself" and what that means and will draw the line where they ask for help in a different place.

The purpose of this forum, for me, is to provide a platform for all that... and sharing back with the community.
