RE: Input sensitivity

Great topic Steve!

My main concern with high input sensitivity (high gain at the input/driver stage, usually) is that any current induced into the interconnect or input stage is converted to voltage (noise) through a high-impedance circuit, then amplified massively. This noise is injected after the volume control and is not attenuated. And as you say, some of those input stages are not in low-noise environments. In the case of cascaded SN7 sections, the amplification approaches 400x.

The counter-argument is that these super-high gain stages give a greater sense of dynamics/drive... but I suspect there are other ways of achieving this without need for massive gain and attendant the noise issue.

Cheers,
