Although I find reductionist thinking helpful, when it comes to the experiencing music in my own home, I prefer a systems thinking approach with a focus on external validity as the final arbiter. After making a system change and listening for a while, am I connecting with music better; enjoying music more; able to gain greater insights etc.?
After making a significant system change about three years ago, occasionally I'll listen to music I have not heard from before the system change and am surprised at how different it sounds to what I expected or am familiar with.
Yes, of course, this approach can be confounded... but that goes for any method, scientific, experiential, philosophical or just about any %ical.
