RE: That's the crux of this matter,

Or fail to take into account:

Expectation/ confirmation bias cuts both ways (positive and negative). If someone does not expect to hear something - for example, through their EE training - then they are more likely no to hear it when it exists.

Crappy experimental design. Those who demand the rigour of a "scientific" approach such as a DBT often fail to understand the importance of using a validated instrument and performing a Power Analysis... for the test to have sufficient validity to perform robust analysis and draw conclusions. They would be surprised of what would be required - the number of subjects required would likely be prohibitively large.

Does the brain work the same way when listening critically as when listening for pleasure? My experience suggests it doesn't. Does the brain respond the same way to an intervention (different component) when it is new as when it has been exposed over a long period of time. Again, I don't think so.

When learning about clinical research, very early on we were taught that our accepted "scientific method" - and what we learn from it - is imperfect. There is no perfect approach (though some are more ideal than others).

It is quite possible for the "perfect experiment" (internally valid) to have little practical relevance (lacks external validity). As listeners, we value external validity.

So what to do? Understand and respect the limitations of our methods... but appreciate myriad methods can contribute to our understanding. Be mindful - and brutally honest - of our audio beliefs, hopes, expectations and reactions. Listen for weeks, not seconds or minutes, before making a decision. Understand that our (subjective) decision is just an opinion; not more, not less - not Truth. Understand that even when attempting to be objective, we introduce a degree of subjectivity. Accept that we don't know everything and there is still much to be explored and understood. Stay curious. Shoshin.

Most importantly for us - as listeners - is to remember to simply experience and enjoy; build a system that makes it easy to enjoy the music.

I've banged on a bit. Again. Sorry.

Cheers,
91.
