Most people don't even realize the role of "bits" in the first place. (Which is to be expected, since a lot of engineers don't even get it right.) High-rez hasn't taken off because it was expensive (viewed as a cost-prohibitive audiophile luxury), it lacked mainstream album selection, and the sonics (unlike vinyl) never made people take notice.
