You'll know better than a slip of a lad like myself, but would I be right in saying that the introduction of CD resulted in an acceleration of the evolution/refinement of turntable designs?

I haven't any experience of turntables before the 80's, but just looking at how a stalwart like the Linn has evolved with the various add-ons and upgrades since then - with what are basically improvements in engineering rather than new technology - has me convinced that perhaps turntable designers before the introduction of CD were dragging their feet somewhat.
