RE: Vinyl analysis -- Musicians rate CD vs. LP sound in blindfold test

I am still behind vinyl all the way, when produced right right, being literally limited by the molecular properties of the material, resolution is not the issue.

The problem is this: Vinyl and CD are mastered from the same master. Sometimes vinyl is cut from the exact same master, the one already dithered down to 16bit for CD. Vinyl being the afterthought since it does not equate to the most sales.

Often, this means that CD can sound better, depending on TT setup and other factors. *IF* vinyl is cut without dithering down, if it is cut from the 24bit master, then you have a good record, but it is STILL a digitally mastered and manipulated signal, transferred to an analog medium.

If Sony weren't sound douchebags, we could kick 16bit PCM to the curb and use DSD freely and have everyone easily accessing high resolution through SACD. SACD, however, is a closed format that is very regulated and controlled by Sony, meaning extremely few releases in generic genres, nothing indie, nothing where the innovation is at the moment. Anyone can make a CD. Hell, anyone can make a vinyl record, as there are many services around that can get one pressed in limited numbers, but the only way to make an SACD is to be approved by Sony to use one of only a few places in the entire world, the ENTIRE WORLD, that can produce one.

I think that 24bit PCM sounds great, myself, and I never understood why DVD did not become the new format, with 24bit PCM. A format anyone can read/write and a medium that anyone can access. *shrugs*
