RE: CD sounded so 'perfect' they then introduced HDCD, 24/96, DVD-Audio, SACD and ?..

I'm making fun of a cynical marketing slogan. None of the 'analog' examples you gave came from a technology that has in it's marketing proported to be 'perfect'.
Philips were cynical enough to think music lovers believe them when they suggested CD was perfect. How daft is that? Any form of CD refinement which took place from there made Philips look like a bunch of bullshitters. After-all, if something is perfect, how can you make it better?
Refining digital audio is a good thing, because in the meantime, the marketing would've/should've read: 'CD - a new, convenient audio technology which is a step backwards in sound quality'.
