Where I live in Vermont is a bit unusual, in that it is rural and the nearest record store is 50 miles away, but there is good DSL service with 650 KB/s download speeds. I have no trouble downloading a high resolution album in less than the time it takes to drive to a record store. (Actually, it has been over 10 years since I went into a physical record store, although I have bought CDs from amazon.com.)

However, my bandwidth doesn't quite hack it for DXD. It took over an hour to download the 10 minute 2L test file in that format. Since my DAC doesn't go at that speed the exercise was academic—I ended up having to downsample the music before I could play it. But even then, it did work. Moore's law coupled with high oil prices should help move people away from shiny plastic disks.
