General audio topics that don't fit into specific categories.

I could not agree more.

I have been finding and purchasing bit-perfect FLAC in more and more genres, representing a larger and larger chunk of the current music scene that matters, IE, not "charted" dreck, but actual music by actual people that do it for the love of the art.

I see this as the future.

I remember when mp3 first came onto the scene, 128kbs was the standard, then 192, and now LAME V0 and 320k, with FLAC becoming adopted at a pace almost as rapid as mp3 way back when.

I don't see any future other than this one, the one we are speaking about, that is more likely. Bands, artists, competing for fan's attention without anything tainted in the process. This is great for both us and the artists, as it will drive the quality of music ever and ever higher, and it will expose people to better and better music.

Eventually, we will break the shackles of 16bit audio and move into the high resolution territory. It just does not make sense in today's age, to have a huge isolated production company press plastic and aluminum discs, that need to be shipped to a store, and then to be taken by you, either by driving to the disc to pick it up, or have it driven/flown again, to your doorstep. This system is completely unnecessary. We have the ability, through distributed bandwidth sharing, to be able to download a high resolution album in the amount of time it would take to go and buy one from a store and bring it home, or have it shipped to us via the mail.

It is all about control. Like I said, of all th albums that I own, I can't think of but a few that are still on a major label, and many of the bands I listen to offer these 320k/V0 mp3s and FLAC, and more increasingly FLAC.

Digital audio, by it's very nature, belongs on the fibers of the internet. It the perfect distribution method, and the more and more labels and artists that understand this fact, the better and better life will be for them and us, music lovers, alike.

From my standpoint, I could not be happier with the direction that musicians are taking... the majors, have only destroyed themselves by fighting something that could have, not only saved them, but grown their empire. I am glad they did not jump right onto this movement, because a world without their monopoly, is a world I want to be a part of.

My ears couldn't be happier, and I know that increasingly, more of my money is falling into the right hands, and not just 5 cents per plastic disc sold.

Sony, while, DSD is great tech, if they cannot make money on it, like anything else under their umbrella, they will just end it. There is no future for SACD as long as Sony decides that the only way one can be created is through them and their few exclusive and well guarded plants on our entire planet.

I would still be happy to buy a physical disc, 24bit PCM on DVD media, I would be happy with that for now, until broadband increases capacity, however, it seems that, at least in the US, the owners of the government subsidized infrastructure, would rather keep offering slow access compared to the world, to leave room for their TV offerings. I can get on demand HDTV and many many HDTV channels through an internet connection using "advanced TV", but I can't get the same company to increase my internet speed beyond 1.5mb down and 384k up. If it isn't Sony wanting to scam you, it is just another company. The scams never seem to end.
