Not really...

Beta was better video quality, but Sony's draconian pricing/contractual problems kept it from being adopted.

Walkman, it played tapes, it was a complete success... open format... It was only until Sony attached the name to the completely pointless ATRAC digital players that required you to transcode all your music to use, pointlessly, arbitrarily, did the consumer decide that it was a pointless effort and bought mp3 players that anyone could use with their mp3 collection. No transcoding.

Trinitron was also a complete success, however Sony killed it prematurely, to jump on the flat screen wagon, when really, at the time, a good tube gave you a better picture, especially in computing, video work, and graphics design. It is STILL hard to find an LCD that can out perform a CRT for a computer. There is no picture better than a well tuned CRT, and some of us have began to covet our 21" tubes. Mitsubishi had a great run on flat tube HDTV. I have one in my living room, a Toshiba 34" HDTV tube, and the picture is wonderful, only plasma can compete, but I got this thing at a garage sale for 200 bucks new. The Sony Wega TVs were some of the best of their time, I understand that plasma is an honest step forward, but Sony did not kill Trinitron for plasma. Sony, again, dropped a technology because of some arbitrary reason. At least with TVs, it wasn't due to some strange licensing issues, it was because people wanted flat TVs and were willing to pay for them, no matter what the loss in picture quality or life. The silver line to this is that it drove the quality of flat monitors up to closely match a good CRT.

I still don't understand why there are no plasma computer monitors though. LCDs hurt my eyes... it is not good to stare at a florescent bulb for hours on end. I was not happy when my job replaced my Trinitron monitors with LCDs. I miss the vibrant colors and when my eyes did not feel like they were bleeding after half a day. LED flat panels are only just now beginning to come down in cost, but a good 21" or larger is still waaaay more expensive than a good 21" CRT.
