If SACD could not be the format of choice Sony killed any other notions.

When Sony, in defeat, declared SACD as specialty audio. The industry accepted all high rez as low profit boutique items. Some thought of Sony's decision as a blessing. They felt some high rez was better than none.

However, Sony understood that controlling the marketplace by sustaining the CD format was a better option for them. For Sony to pretend to recognize specialty audio as a nod to sound quality was a bigger joke (and a hint of future betrayal) than "perfect sound forever".

That company is full of irony, to put it politely.
