Had CD playback advanced the way I think it could have (the "Wadia 9" sound eventually becoming available to the masses), high-rez wouldn't have even been necessary......

I played an HDCD CD of the Reference Recordings Istomin/Schwarz/Seattle Mozart Concertos 21/24, and it had an organic realism that approaches vinyl, without the "sterile" fatiguing character of high-rez. If HDCD ever becomes a more-prominent technology (it certainly isn't dead), it could be the saving grace for digital audio playback.
