I think nowadays, providing analogue sound is probably just adding the analogue 'hiss' with the odd pop and crackle, although a few artists have actually recorded to analogue fairly recently.

You don't need me to tell you that recording and mixing digitally then transferring to tape and back to digital will lose resolution and won't result in a more natural ('analogue' as we know it) sound, but I doubt you'll be able to convince your friend unless you get some beers down him. :0)
