General audio topics that don't fit into specific categories.

I was responding to what you had said about "obvious hiss" and "familiar flaws".

Then you go and change the subject: "Clark, we are talking about two different things, I am speaking of the strengths and weaknesses of the recording medium."

Here I thought we had been discusssing LPs and CDs. But let it pass.

"Have you ever compared any good 15ips tape recorder side by side with a decent digital one, recording and playing back a live performance or event you were present for?

"Similarly, I suspect not."

Actually I have. It was a Mahler Second in Symphony Hall. The digital sounded like hell.

"If you had the same experiences as me recording you would conclude that while many CD’s sound bad, when you compare what the medium can do alone (not what is done with it) it is pretty clear and 24/96 is better yet."

Huh? Another whole topic, 24/96. But: "It is pretty clear". I never said that digital masters couldn't sound better than the CDs made from them. In fact, they normally do! (Ditto the analog realm.)

But the propheads ("objectivists") are stuck with their "bits is bits" litany and demonstrably the numbers are the same on masters and CDs, so the sound must be the same Q.E.D.

LOL!
