I like some formats more than others. Many are shocked that my favorite format is Cassette on my Nakamichi deck, pre-recorded no less all I can say is they have the highest "goose bump" factor, deep bass and are extremely musical. Down side is all but the best audiophile cassettes have some compression of the highest frequencies but so does listening to music in a concert hall.

Next I think I like Reel to Reel which has much better specs than cassette, I have some audiophile ones on 1.5 mill mastering tape and of course all of Reel to Reels are 7 1/2 IPS, I love my Reel to Reels but I cannot for the life of me figure out why I enjoy cassettes more. The most realistic sonics I have are on Reel to Reel and I have some major demo material.

Next would be audiophile LPs, the best audiophile LPs are full range recordings and sound very lifelike and are very enjoyable and have a you-are-there quality to them. I'm not a big fan of commercial LPs although some people really love them. Most commercial LPs frequency extremes are rolled-off, have audible distortion on climaxes, audible surface noise, there seems to be a closed in quality to most of them. I have found quite a few exceptions to this but there were a lot of really poor sounding LPs made over the decades.

Next would be SACD, SACD's magic is in the midrange as it does midrange better than any format including LP. The bass is very realistic and deep, it almost sounds analog-like but the best audiophile LPs still have more ambiance.

Next would be DVD-Audio and 24/96 DADs with much the benefit of SACDs without the magic midrange with the sole exception of 24/192 DVD-Audios which seem to be close to SACDs midrange magic.

Bringing up the rear would be the better CDs such as Telarc and Reference Recordings, the lossless downloads and MP3 at 196kbps or higher. Now that I can play CD without pain I can now get recordings in these formats that are not available in the above formats. All of this is listenable now just not my first choice.

Sorry I went so long winded, I just wanted to point out that owning multiple formats does not remove format preferences, it just makes it easier to get anything one wants.

Music is love,
Mono is not music to my ears.
Give me stereo or give me silence!
