RE: "I see no problem with that. If you don't ask them they won't say - if you do they will."

Well they do their best to carry stuff that isn't crap. And really nothing they sell is 'crap.' A case can be made for anything in the store on some level. For instance they may sell one of those ipod docking station things and while none of them would say it's good sounding in absolute terms it may in fact be very good compared to all other ipod mini-system products. Compared to the Quad electrostatic panels it's crap. They would not use the word crap but I'm pretty sure anyone on this forum would agree.

If it's a case like me on my first time there I had phoned ahead to ask them to set-up 4 standmounts for audition and I asked them to add one they felt was competitive or worthy of audition. I listened to all five and I preferred the one that they recommended, though I had not heard of the company. They said yeah we think it's the best stand mount in the store.

It's an opinion - it doesn't mean the other's were bad but there are certainly degrees of good.

I would far rather a dealer have an actual truthful opinion than just LIE and say all five are equally good when you'd have to be completely tone deaf to come to that conclusion. If they told me that then I'd have to conclude they were lying.

And that very same speaker maker they liked that I liked, well that company sent an entry level speaker and when we listened it was "yeah not great right? Listen to this other maker's speaker for the same money - much better, and it was.

I know a dealer in Vancouver who sold B&O and if you asked him about the sound he would say "it sounds mediocre but it looks great." He was the number one selling B&O salesman in the country for years getting various rewards from the company. How can you sell with remarks like that I asked him? His reply was that the customer of this stuff knows what they're getting - a style product that sacrifices sound. If you tell them otherwise then they'll be distrustful.

When you pay for an Escort you're not getting a Ferrari and if the salesman is telling you otherwise that's the guy to walk away from. Soundhounds will tell you it's an Escort when it's an escort and a Ferrari when it's a Ferrari. And that's maybe why they stay in business while most of the competition goes under.

All that said it doesn't mean you will agree with them on their opinions - but that's true of most anything in life.
