I think the bottom line is

that it's a personal media. The pictures, posters, liner notes and the "effort" involved makes it a personal interaction. The sound is secondary IMO. In this day of sound bytes, single song downloads and the general non personal nomadic nature of our society, I think that many are looking for something more real and tangible. No other music media can even come close the LP for it's romantic qualities.
