Re: Break-in Phenomena, Fancy wires, wall sockets, and CD Treatments

The power of suggestion is surely understood by anyone with any scope for logical thought, but the fact that we can`t measure differences in sound illustrates the restrictions and limitations of our measuring tools, not the actual sound changes themselves.

What exactly are `today`s` established facts anyway? They do tend to change don`t they depending on the technology available.
Remember when we couldn`t hear below a certain frequency, or above a certain frequency so it was pointless catering for these frequencies? This was then `disproved` and although we couldn`t `hear` certain frequencies, we were `aware` when they were missing from audio playback, or were `aware` of improvment when these frequencies were added....Doh!

Science is definately NOT the exact art you assume it is, and most studies `suggest` a conclusion - if enough scientists agree, this is then the `accepted scientific fact`.

Believe me, in the UK we had the top scientists assuring us that BSE (have I gone off on a tangent here?) was definately safe to humans, no doubt about it whatsoever - until further recearch `suggested` that this...er...might not be entirely true.

Gulf War Syndrome - no scientific evidence whatsoever that the multiple vacinations caused this.....then the Americans started paying compensation (the UK Government hasn`t by the way).

Men evolved from apes - it`s a fact, we`ve got skeletons, we`ve got footprints.....then carbon dating came along and guess what? Yep, established facts were proved to be...FALSE! This is why we refer to Darwin`s `Theory` of evolution, not the `facts` of evolution - the theory tends to alter with every new discovery and now `proves` that we didn`t evolve from apes at all.

Birds evolved from dinosaurs and are their closest modern day relative - the guy who first proposed this was condemned as a crank, and oestrasised by his contemporaries as `accepted` theory `proved` otherwise.
Then carbon dating came to the rescue once again, and a couple of perfect skeletons came to light in Japan which `suggested` that the crank was correct.
He`s a genius now by the way!

I could go on but you get the picture - scientists/technicians do not have the monopoly on common sense - far from it in my experience, and I have a lot of experince of scientists believe me.

Cables DO burn in, sorry but if I lived in your area I`d bring along a pair of new silver ICs and demonstrate a 100% success rate in a blind-test at distinguishing them from a burned in pair; it`s a test I`ve already done and found easy.
If no change in impedence, resistance of capacitance is measured then it only shows the superiority of our sense of hearing over the lab surely?
No astronomer has ever seen a black hole, but by observing the actions of planets and matter which are affected by black-holes they are 99% sure black-holes exist (it`s accepted fact for goodness` sake!). Even though, we can`t `see` (with modern instruments) any change in a cable during burn in, the fact that it has an effect on a system`s sound means that it`s logical to assume something HAS changed within the cable.

Before this descends into a rant at you, I`ll readily state that I`ll agree with the general issue of our susceptability to suggestion and psycho acoustics.

If a stereo system has no solid central image, experiments have `suggested` that simply positioning a dummy centre-speaker leads listeners to comment how the image has improved.
Using low lighting gives the impression of warmth to a system - I`m quite sure that listening to music whilst gazing at valve-amps adds to their presentation; certainly, in blind listening with a decent class `A` solid-state for comparison a few of the valve-lovers would be embarrassed at how hard it was to distinguish between the two without that golden glow (unless bass was needed of course:0))

Finally, leaps of faith where Hi-fi is concerned usually means the payment of not inconsiderable funds into somebody elses bank balance, so I for one simply rely on my ears, and with this I don`t mean that I perceive a difference/improvement to justify purchasing a `turkey` - if there`s no improvement the product goes back to whence it came - no messing. Burn in on the other hand costs nothing, so there`s no incentive for self-deception at all, and certainly not to simply join in with `accepted` theory on this board or elsewhere - I spend most of my time questioning accepted theory if truth be told.

Best Regards,
Chris Redmond.
