you nailed it

For a quick test I cut 4 pieces of 2x4, raising them 3 1/2". But the seat of the bar stool is 6-7" higher than my folding chair. Maybe it was placebo, but I felt like the tonal balance was off. I introduced a slight backward tilt and it seemed more "right". The bass was thin, but the mids and highs had more air, almost to the point of being bright. But I liked it better than the bloat I have been dealing with all this time.

I pushed them back a couple of inches and listened to a couple of more songs before I had to move on to other things. I plan on spending some time up there this afternoon to get a better feel for it. But I think raising them 5 1/2" with some 2x6 and keeping them level might be a good starting point for this experiment.
