The Asylum full-text search will normally find messages that contain one or all words entered in the search criteria. The results are then ranked based on a score derived from the number of words found and their proximity to one another. To improve your search results, you may also use the following operators:
+
- A leading plus sign indicates that this word must be present in every row returned.
-
- A leading minus sign indicates that this word must not be present in any row returned.
- By default (when neither plus nor minus is specified) the word is optional, but the rows that contain it will be rated higher. This mimics the behavior of
MATCH() ... AGAINST()
without theIN BOOLEAN MODE
modifier.< >
- These two operators are used to change a word's contribution to the relevance value that is assigned to a row. The
<
operator decreases the contribution and the>
operator increases it. See the example below.( )
- Parentheses are used to group words into subexpressions.
~
- A leading tilde acts as a negation operator, causing the word's contribution to the row relevance to be negative. It's useful for marking noise words. A row that contains such a word will be rated lower than others, but will not be excluded altogether, as it would be with the
-
operator.*
- An asterisk is the truncation operator. Unlike the other operators, it should be appended to the word, not prepended.
And here are some examples:
apple banana
- find rows that contain at least one of these words.
+apple +juice
- ... both words.
+apple macintosh
- ... word ``apple'', but rank it higher if it also contain ``macintosh''.
+apple -macintosh
- ... word ``apple'' but not ``macintosh''.
+apple +(>pie <strudel)
- ... ``apple'' and ``pie'', or ``apple'' and ``strudel'' (in any order), but rank ``apple pie'' higher than ``apple strudel''.
apple*
- ... ``apple'', ``apples'', ``applesauce'', and ``applet''.

We hope that these issues will be resolved in the next release of mySQL. If you notice other problems or wish to request enhancements, please post a message on the Feedback/Support Forum.
String order
- If your query fails, try switching around the order of the words. For example:
This query, 'sacd +audionote +sony', fails.
It appears to be unpredictable as:
But this one, 'sacd +sony +audionote' , works.
This query, 'sacd +transport -sony +cd' works.
And this one, 'sacd +cd +transport -sony' doesn't.Using wildcards
- Again the order of the words and where the wildcards are placed can cause different results.
This query, 'sacd +transport +scd* +dac', works.
But this one, 'sacd +scd* +transport +dac', and other combinations fail.Using AND and OR boolean modes
- If you use the advanced operators above like the + and -, then selecting 'AND' is unnecessary. Otherwise, selecting 'AND' will cause all words to be prefaced with the '+' operator except those enclosed in parentheses, (), or with a '-' operator.
