What happened to the GOP? - A former Republican wonders...

My first non-audio post is prompted by my search for an intelligent discourse about the GOP.

I'm a veteran, graduate of the US Naval Academy, patriot, posess a global perspective (have worked, lived or travelled to all 7 continents), a fiscal conservative, believe in limited federal government, states rights, and individual choice.

The old GOP, for all it's faults, used to embody many of these principals. Think Reagan, Goldwater, and more recently Schwarzenegger. While far from perfect, I find these principals more alligned with mine, compared to the big government solutions (that I find intrusive) proposed by the Dems in the past.

Now, the parties have done a complete 180. This Administration inherited a balanced budget, recklessly spent the country into deficit, has overseen 2 wars (one which had broad support, the other reckless and questionable at best), overseen gas prices near $3/gal, a declining dollar reflecting less investor confidence in our country. Not to mention embracing religious ideology as political policy, that ultimately impinges our private lives, whether we choose to participate as religious individuals.

Furthermore, this Administration is quick to threaten our adversaries with force. This saber rattling cost thousands of lives of our soldiers and sailors, innocent civilians, and our enemies (I don't shed tears for the enemies). Yet for all the resources expended, where is Osama's head on a stick? And are we prepared to fight N Korea and Iran over their WMDs? And who's next? Are we going to war with anyone disagreeable with Democracy?

I'm proud of my country. Now, I'm ashamed of the behavior of our leaders.

Last election was the first ever I voted Democrat. Not because Kerry the candidate was inspiring, rather Bush the president has caused more damage to the country than I remember during my life time. Mine was a vote for change, anything different than the current occupent of the White House.

My hope for the future is that either or preferably both parties let their best and brightest rise to the top, giving the electorate a choice between two good men (or women) rather than mediocrity. Perhaps a McCain, Obama (too early, I know) or another leader strong enough to rise above their party dogma.

Thanks - had to get it out!
