I was fortunate enough to rescue a chihuahua who was a stray 3 years ago. He is an alpha male, but at 5 pounds, nobody gets scared. He is also a great little guy, smart and sweet.
I have known a number of large dogs. Good friends had 2 pit bull mixes while their children were small. These were very nice dogs and fine with the kids. My uncle was partial to Dobermans- extremely fearsome looking large animals, but again all of his dogs were sweet as kittens.
And some years back, walking a golden retriever, a pit bull broke its chain and attacked, biting my dog- thankfully and very luckily the injuries were minor.
I am cautious with any large dog, no matter what breed.
