one thing I am learning...

particularly from Master of the Senate, which I am 1/2 way through now, is that 1930s, 40s and 50s saw deep deep divisions, particularly based upon the subject of segregation. The battle lines were not all that dissimilar to those today. Conservatives hated big government spending, social programs and foreign engagement. And in those days, Southern conservatives hated the idea that the feds might force race mixing in their traditional Southern culture. In comparison to what was happening then, the more recent partisan divide does not seem all that huge.
