I recently read Robert Caro's most recent book on LBJ and now I am going through his previous volume.
LBJ had an absolute lust for power. It was in him from his early years.
I don't think anyone can become the president of (still) the most powerful country on the planet without that kind of deep desire and drive that normal people can never understand. Whether it is the wish to be a part of history, whether it is altruistic, or whether it is simply a sort of ultimate thrill- I am absolutely sure that Obama would not be "relieved" to lose, nor would Romney. These guys want this a lot more than football players want Super Bowl rings.
