There are different "Democrats" and always have been...

Back in the mid-1900s, Republicans could not win in the South. The Southern Democrats represented the constituency of the South. Generally, blacks were not allowed to vote, and the voting populace was strongly in support of segregation.

The Southern Democrats formed a strong force against integration, generally in partnership with northern conservative Republicans.

The northern Democrats of the time were generally liberal on social issues, supporting civil rights.

So there were very different types of Democrats. However, the reaction against the pro-business policies of the 1920s has led generally since the time of Roosevelt and Truman to Democrats favoring the rights of workers and such large scale social programs as Social Security. And as a broad generality, I would say Democrats stand for those things today.

Truman wanted a federal health care program. It took until Obama for a version to be passed. Although it is far from ideal, it is on the same basic road as the Democrats of the 1940s wanted.
