In America, free speech is sacrosanct, and the most vile opinions are perfectly legal- and having been raised in this system, I would not want it otherwise.
But in Germany, there are anti-Nazi laws, including laws against Holocaust denial. Given the pretty recent historical events, it is understandable that Germany would want to keep the forces of fascism at bay. It is not just an academic exercise, there is a significant possibility that these forces could resurge. I'm not sure whether American free speech trumps this.
