a bit too young...Nixon ended the draft before my time to make a difficult choice.
I am not a pacifist. Human history is filled with the stories of subjugation, mass murder, and slavery.
But in the end, I am sympathetic to the pacifist lyrics of Phil Ochs: It's always the old who lead us to the war, always the young who die.
If sacrifice is not shared, it is very unfair. While young men and women risk their lives in Afghanistan today, who feels any pain in the US? How long would this go on if in fact every family without a fighting son or daughter was assessed a $25,000 surtax?
I am not for a draft, but if one exists, it should somehow hit everyone in society equally.
