The offending pedal assemblies were made in Indiana- fine American work ! +Bonus photo of the last great American car!

PHOTO: The Last great American Car: 1949 Cadillac Series 62 convertible. This was the first year of the excellent 331 cu. in. overhead valve V-8. These were great looking- light, nimble, and pre wanker-fin! I had a 1955 CoupedeVille using the last year of the 331 and it was one of the smoothest running engines ever.

dave c,

I've seen a couple of times, someone holding up the Toyota pedal assemblies causing the recall and pointing out that they were made in Indiana. The Prius problem is occurring when the pedal is prevented from moving when the pad gets caught on thick accessory mats. I saw a ludicrous scene where someone at a dealership has a Prius pedal in a vice and is cutting it shorter with a hacksaw blade!

I love this national drama over "dangerous" Toyotas and the obvious pride resulting from American car sales improving .04% as a result. It's pathetic when the only pride possible in American cars is when someone else has a minor failure! Far more American cars -almost 3X have been recalled in the last ten years than all Japanese, English, and German cars together.

And, Toyota in my view should be commended for biting the bullet and making a comprehensive fix- there were apparently only 17 incidents with the gas pedal out of millions of car doing billions of miles with two deaths. I think 25 or so died from exploding Pintos. We didn't hear about it until the lawsuits began to cost more than the fuel tank fix which was $24 per car.

I saw a new Taurus a couple of days ago- and yes, it's the finest 2004 car available today- a but lumpy looking- it's got the stench of Chrysler 300 high sides and low window look- presumably to catch a bit of the elderly white suburban gangsta rapper market. They're starting to copy Hyundai rear end designs too- I think a poor choice.

Ford is a worthwhile company, but we should import them and close GM and Chrysler. No one cares about the American autoworker anyway- the unions are reviled and GM spends more on health care than building cars so why not scatter the failed US car industry to the four winds and put everyone to work on "Avatar" sequels (the next one is "Pandora's Box and the Shrine of the Seven Steps of Effective Weight Loss")- the only American enterprise making anything.

Cheers,

Bambi B
