I agree, verbosity for it's own sake is destructive of discourse

artemus,

Yes, I agree completely, verbosity for it's own sake is destructive of discourse. But, intellectualism with verbosity is not always the case. necessarily If you've ever read French deconstructivist tracts you'll know what I mean. They've certainly contrived it so there's no way to argue!

However, intellectualism with verbosity is not always the equation. What the Neocons refuse to do is admit that a lot of issues are complex and need more than three single-syllable word slogans based on lies, geared down to their concept of the American public as scared, easily manipulated idiots to explain or solve. Yes, it may sometimes take some big words, and many long sentences !

For a great country founded by Enlightenment intellectual thought to have sunk itself to the level of Bush, Limbaugh, and Palin always amazes those of us who believe in basic American principles of social fairness and cultural progress as this country's ultimate potential. Conservatives today seem to only see the money making opportunities using threats of violence. A real American conservative would promote social progress and peace fro it's citizens just as it was founded.

The Founding Fathers were such elevated intellectuals- you may have heard the word "gentlemen"- it didn't occur to them the way a few extremely rich, greedy groups would combine to change founding revolutionary and utopian principles to an environment of pigs at the trough, convincing the ordinary citizen to vote against their own interests- and wishing the government to fail to get it out of the way- in favour of making the rich richer by privatising everything including war and gutting regulations designed to protect the citizens- such as vehicle safety. How stupid is that? How stupid are the people that vote- and defend- the tripled housing prices, gas, food, medical care costs, wiretapping, illegal/immoral wars at $2 Billion per week? -It's even more blatant than early nazi-ism- which did at least use public money for public benefit

And, the anti-intellectual stance of conservatives preserves them from Those who've lived in other countries will have perspective as to how staggeringly strange is the promotion of violence in the US as the solution for every solution. > Examples: US gun murders, 14,000- UK- 40, 4 million displaced Iraqis and as many as 600,000 dead in an immoral war, 4 Presidents assainated. Here, even ostensibly positive movements such as literacy is fought with a "war". Instead of "Fun with Phonetics" President Palin will henceforth call it, "reed or die, you'll be working at booger king anyway".

And I also agree with you that another annoying habit of the pseudo-intellectual conservative is to avoid addressing content and attack the messenger in floundering, subjective ways and with an air of absolutism.

artemus, you seem a smart fellow- who I believe honestly wants good things for the US just as I do. -You don't need to hide behind packaged political thought. Release prejudice and bitterness, engage your brain, and think about whose interests you really want to protect in the long run.

Cheers,

Bambi B
