Fozgometer

An inmate sent me a Fozgometer to evaluate and I conducted some tests. I first connected the Fozgometer to a Kenwood low-distortion signal generator set for 1-kHz to test for calibration. The meter sent to me was perfectly calibrated in the sense that crosstalk in both directions gave identical meter readings and also in the sense that the numbers on the meter indicated the decibel level of the crosstalk readings. Therefore, I felt no need to make any changes to the internal calibration adjustments.

Next, I tested it on both my turntables using line-level outputs from my Masterlink digital recorder. I recorded the test LP signals at 24/96 high-resolution digital for later transfer to my computer for spectrum analyzer measurements. I connected the Fozgometer to the Masterlink outputs and recorded the meter readings. Crosstalk measurements were within a decibel or two between the Fozgometer readings and the computer spectrum analyzer measurements.

Finally, I tested the Fozgometer connected directly to a 5-mV AT7V MM phono cartridge and also when connected to the phono stage outputs. I got identical readings from the phono stage outputs as I got from the recorded test signals, but I got erroneous readings when connected directly to the phono cartridge. Consequently, I believe the Fozgometer should always be used with line-level outputs from a phono stage or from the tape outputs of a control preamplifier.

Both my cartridges were set for zero-degrees azimuth for these tests. I used an Audio Technica Stereophonic Test Record AT-6606 with a 1-kHz lateral test signal in addition to individual left and right channel 1-kHz test signals. Both cartridges have negligible channel imbalance and the center green light remained on steadily for the lateral 1-kHz test. This will probably be the case for all but defective cartridges because it takes a 1.5-dB imbalance for either of the red lights to turn on and it takes a full 3-dB imbalance for the center green light to extinguish.

Here are the crosstalk results. You will notice that the Fozgometer readings when connected directly to the AT7V phono cartridge are significantly low by several decibels.
