SME 3009 S2 Improved arm question

I have the manual for the arm, but not sure about the purpose of sliding that rider weight arm out to the side based on the weight of the cartridge. (Pg 12 #132)

It would seem that would be something you'd do to adjust the azimuth if it were a unipivot arm, but it's not (is it?)

Anyone know what this is does?
