Prior to dome tweeters becoming common in the 1970s, most speakers didn't make it out to 20KHz. So recording engineers didn't pay attention to the very top-end because most speakers couldn't reproduce it.Then, in the 1980s, recording engineers started giving LPs much more sizzle to "compete" with CDs. At least this is true of pop/rock LPs: the 80s ones in my collection are noticably brighter than the 70s ones.
