Re: Survey: And What Was Your First Turntable?

As a child I had a "Vanity Fair" record player. I just checked eBay and there are four of these for sale right now. Judging from the prices, they don't appear to have become collectable...

Then my parents bought me my first stereo (in that it had two speakers). It was made by Lafayette electronics and came with the ubiquitous (in the 1970s) BSR record changer - ceramic cartridge and audible rumble even with crummy speakers.

My first "hi-fi" turntable was a Dual 1237, purchased in 1976. This was the first turntable I ever owned that - surprise! - didn't wear out my records in less than 10 plays. It even came with a Grado cartridge (a black, I believe). As a teenager, I was very happy with the Dual.

Then a strange thing happened. CDs came out in 1982 and I figured it didn't make sense to buy a new turntable. So I kept the Dual. And then - almost 20 years later - I realized that records didn't sound bad at all. In fact, they were much smoother sounding than CDs. So here I am with an old Dual listening to records.
