The motor shaft has a number of sections that expand/contract as the pitch control is turned, in effect changing the shaft's diameter. On my Dual 1237, turning the pitch control causes the metal bracket and pin on top of the shaft to raise or lower, contracting or spreading the sections of the shaft. It sounds like the linkage between the pitch control and this bracket is broken.
