I used a kids toy, the Eyeclops, for tip inspection. Not the best results, but the investment was low. I figured that TV viewing would work for me, since I have a large display.
Depth of field was very shallow, as expected. I was able to get enough resolution to find a small pet hair wrapped around the diamond, something that would be hard to clean otherwise. I picked it off, unwinding it with tweezers, under the magnification.
I was not able to see the diamond well, but I think with supplemental lighting it could be done. After all, I had the cantilever blown up to about three feet long, with color. I just couldn't get the facets on the tip. I think this is a lighting problem, since other things of equal minutia show well.
Once I was satisfied the tip was cleaned, I put the thing away. I do plan on dragging the thing out again one of these days and try hitting the tip with a red pointer laser. That should light the diamond up enough to catch more details. IT stated 200x magnification on the box, and when focused has a nice picture
