I listen to pop/rock music from the 70s and there seems to be two problems. The tape recorders of that era weren't capable of producing tight bass - the bass that's there is usually flabby, mushy, poorly-defined, etc. Secondly, on many pop and rock records, the bass was purposely rolled off to prevent skipping. The record companies know that their product is not always played on good equipment, and they don't want too many "defective" returns.
