RE: Yes there is . . .

HB -- (The tip of) a cutter head points backward, against the direction of travel of the rotating wax/shellac platter; very similar to a wood chisel. That's so the shavings will "peel off" and out of the way as it cuts the groove. If the cutterhead were dead vertical, the peelings would jam up between the cutterhead and the (newly cut) groove -- not a good thing!

As a result, the groove undulations wiggle side to side but they ALSO TILT FORWARD (from the bottom of the groove to the top, looking from the side) in the direction of travel of the rotating platter. Since a line contact stylus mimics the "spade" shape of the cutter head, by properly adjusting the tonearm post (usually up) at the main pivot, you can get the stylus rake to closely match the backward-pointing cutterhead rake, thus locking it into the (forward-leaning) groove undulations.

A microline stylus will definitely out-track a conical or elliptical stylus. The fact that you experienced the reverse, may have something to do with the AT440MLa's stylus being raked the wrong way ;-) Change that and you'll have a whole new experience, I promise!
