RE: Tonearms without off-set angle - meaning straight arm

A 12" straight-line TA will have some tracking error, but probably no more than a 9" TA with offset ;-) The main reason for 12" tonearms (back in the day ;-) was for playing large transcription discs in broadcasting studios. That's why studio TT's have bigger platters.

Personally, I don't think 12" tonearms have any advantage over modern 9" offset tonearms. Further, it becomes harder to keep their effective mass low (enough) while at the same time controlling resonances in the longer arm wand.

I'm thumbs down on this one, unless I was setting up a vintage 78 rpm mono playback system with a GE piezo crystal cartridge!! But try telling any of this to some audiophiles ;-)
