Yes, the static charge has to drain to a ground somewhere . . . . hello!!

However, the "touching something grounded with your other hand" method doesn't always work (for a variety of reasons.) A length of light-pull chain fastened to the (metal) brush handle and to a ground is superior to anything else I ever tried.

Devices like the Zero-stat DO work; they also delay (but don't prevent) the build-up of static while the record is playing. But they don't get those last few specks off the record either ;-) I live in (very dry) Tucson AZ, and have never had to resort to an ionizer-type device.
