Olly- If you are still looking for a suction motor and you want quiet, I would suggest trying to find a motor from a Miele canister vacuum cleaner .I believe that the Miele is made in Germany, so naturally it is an engineering marvel, strong adjustable suction, and did I mention, quiet, very quiet. If I had known how LOUD my VPI 16.5 was ahead of time, I probably wouldn't have bought it. The sound of a loud vacuum cleaner motor is like fingernails on a chalkboard to me. YMMV, regards, wpod
