Hi T Bone-I agree about nylon/teflon parts and motor oils with additives (which they all have: detergents as you said plus defoaming agents etc)- without knowing the effect of those additives I would avoid motor oil. As to "fine" oils breaking down, if they're not exposed to the atmosphere and not subject to extreme high temperatures they should maintain their properties- especially synthetic oils. All of the tests I've seen/read on motor oils have been (obviously) with regard to their performance in motors- ordinary motor oil starts to break down almost immediately, synthetics after a few thousand miles and at a slower rate.
If a bearing is designed to use motor grade oils, then you should use it (I probably wouldn't, if a bearing needed a viscose oil such as motor oil I'd still prefer a synthetic grease). However for other close tolerance bearings low viscosity oils simply have lower friction.
