one more thing Wally...

Machine oil like 3-in-one or similar contains anti-oxidation additives that resist (to me it's a matter of slowing down the process, eventually they all become bad anyways) oxidation. using thest lube in a light duty application it should last many years (> 4 years?).

I see the associated problems of using the wrong kind of lube as follows:

(1) gumming up the bearing shaft/sleeve: If the oil is viscous and of poor quality (no anti-oxidants meaning the oil will oxidize quicker than you expected, becoming some thick gunk as time goes by) it will cause a lot of drag and wear too.

(2) Too thin/not enough lube between the 2 surfaces/surface has voids or uneven machining: insufficient lube to suspend the bearing by "hydro-wedgeing" effect will cause the bearing to rub onto each other, generating heat which subsequently causing failure and excessive wear.

Provided that the above 2 points are well observed or controlled by using good quality lube there shouldn't be a problem in terms of life afterall. Most applications given proper care (regularly cleaning out the old lube or add a drop or 2 fresh lube) the machines should last you a life time.

I was told by some machinists many years ago that the best lube comes from whale /mink oil base. With added anit-oxidants(only) it's been proven that it'll last a life time (or at least 20 years or more) in light duty applications. Unfortunately we have no choice these days but to use mineral-based oil. Synthetic just won't cut it for the moment simply because it's very thick right from the start and it'll take considerably more chemical additives to "lighten" it to the proper viscosity.

When I mean a drop is usually something like a ear-dropper's 1 drop. Sorry for the confision.

Take care!
